BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID 2017
Articulate Project Space Leichhardt
On the long crush through the Vatican Museum my sculptor friend remembers. She was taking her young nephew through a similar gallery years ago. She explained to him that in art history times the Catholic Church, being offended by penises on nude statues, had chiseled then off and replaced them with fig leaves. He quickly reasoned: then that must mean that there is a storeroom full of all those offending organs. And where was it? I attended the Royal Commission and worked with images that arose over the five years it sat. Hearing my friends story I think perhaps that's what I made in this exhibition: A room where all the things that the Catholic Church have not wanted to look at, are stored. |
